Understanding Lip Filler

Lip filler is also known as lip augmentation or lip enhancement. The procedure involves injecting hyaluronic acid filler into the lips to achieve a plumper and symmetrical look. Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in the body. It helps to add volume and moisture to the lips.

Lip Filler FAQ's

What is lip filler?

Lip filler procedure has become very popular in the recent years.

Lip filler is more than just a cosmetic procedure, it is a form of art. It can add volume, improve lip contour and symmetry.

The key ingredient is hyaluronic acid. This naturally occurring substance in human body plays a crucial role in maintaining skin’s hydration. When injected into your lips, it works its magic by binding to water molecules. It has a plumping effect that enhances volume and smoothness.

Lip fillers combine art and science.

Lip filler can transform your lips to look fuller, softer and more hydrated.

Natural and Plump Lips

One of the misconceptions about lip filler is that it always end up looking quite drastic and exaggerated.

We can achieve a subtle and natural looking but still significant enhancements. Fuller lips that maintain a natural look. We focus on enhancing the shape and natural structure to complement your features. The key is to enhance your natural, unique features rather than create an artificial appearance.

Achieving Symmetry with Lip Filler

The beauty is often seen as balance and harmony. Your lips are one of your most visible features and deserve the same attention to detail as your eyes or eyebrows.

Lip fillers are an effective non-surgical option for achieving lip symmetry and balance.

When it comes to lips we can create equal shape, size, and volume of both sides. Symmetry is important to achieve facial harmony.

Lip filler can correct asymmetry by adding volume or shape to specific areas only. For instance, if one side of the upper lip is thinner or lower than the other, a precise amount of filler injected in the lower side can raise and plump it to match the other. This adjustment enhances the overall symmetry of the lips.
The key is in the precision and over-injection can lead to an unnatural look, while under-injection might not correct the asymmetry adequately.

Results are immediate, although some swelling might hide the final outcome for a short period. Regular follow-up treatments may be necessary to maintain symmetry as the body naturally absorbs the filler over time.

Different Types of Lip filler, and how to choose the Right One for me?

There are several types of lip filler available. These fillers provide a temporary result, lasting from several months to a year, depending on the person’s individual metabolism. Consult with us to help you determine the most suitable type of filler for your desired outcome.

What to Expect during your filler procedure?

Getting lip filler can be exciting, but knowing what to expect is important for a successful outcome.

We start with a consultation, assessing your goals, discussing expectations, and addressing any concerns you may have. The procedure itself is relatively quick, typically taking between 30-60 minutes. We apply a topical numbing cream to minimise your discomfort during the procedure. Then we will inject the dermal filler into your lips , sculpting and shaping for desired look. The filler also contains an anaesthetic – lidocaine to make the procedure even more comfortable.

Lip Filler Aftercare

After the lip filler procedure, post-treatment care is important to ensure optimal results and minimise any potential side effects. It is normal to experience some swelling and bruising, which subsides within a few days. You should avoid strenuous activities and hot temperatures. Additionally, it is important to keeping your lips moisturised and avoid sun exposure. Following the aftercare instructions will aid in maintaining the longevity and look of your lip filler.

We give our clients full, printed out detailed aftercare to follow.

The final look of your lip filler will be visible after 2-4 weeks.

Sometimes lips may feel a little lumpy during the first month. This is normal and it will disappear by week 4.

What do I need to know about lip filler?

We use dermal fillers containing cross linked hyaluronic acid of different density. The hyaluronic acid fillers are safe and intended to be used on the lips. Hyaluronic acid is very well tolerated, it completely integrates with the skin. The longevity of the filler depends on the density of the filler. For lips we may use soft or medium density fillers. Other factors like client’s metabolism, lifestyle, health conditions and medication may also determine how well it lasts. Some people naturally break down filler faster when compared to others, and may require more treatments to build up the filler to desired result.

Potential Risks and Side Effects

While lip filler procedure is generally considered safe, it is essential to be aware of some potential risks and side effects. Temporary redness, swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the area are quite common and typically resolve within a few days. In extremely rare cases, more severe complications such as infections, asymmetry, occlusion or allergic reactions may happen. Transparent communication with your injector and following the pre and after care instructions, helps to ensure a safe and satisfactory outcome. During your appointment we will inform you about every possible side effect in great detail. We also give all of our clients a written aftercare, a detailed list of possible complications and how to spot and deal with them.

Is the lip filler procedure painful?

While the idea of needles and injections might be concerning, the reality is far gentler than you might think.

Discomfort during this procedure is minimal, we use a topical numbing cream, to ensure a relatively painless experience. The hyaluronic acid filler contains lidocaine, it is a strong anaesthetic that reduces the pain, hence making this procedure even more comfortable.

Pain is a highly subjective experience, and its perception varies from person to person. Some people describe the sensation as a mild pinch, while others barely notice it. What’s consistent, however, is the excitement and satisfaction that follows the procedure, as enhanced lips take center stage.

This transformation is a journey worth taking. The temporary discomfort that may be experienced during the procedure is short lived, and a small price to pay for the lasting enhancement that follows.

Pain perception is temporary, and the beautiful lips achieved in the process last a long time.

How long does lip filler last?

Lip filler is not permanent, it enhances and redefine lips for some time. Unlike any permanent procedures, lip filler offers you the flexibility to adapt and change your look as your style changes.

Typically it lasts anywhere from 6 months to 12 months. The duration depends on several factors. This includes the type of filler, your body’s metabolism, and your individual response to the treatment. While some people enjoy it for longer, others may find that it gradually fades within shorter timeframe.

Filler can be customised and you can choose how often you wish to maintain your lips, whether it’s a touch-up twice a year or an annual refreshment. It’s a perfect choice for people who seek to evolve with the changing seasons of beauty.

We use either soft or medium filler, the soft filler lasts around 6 months and medium one lasts 12 months.

Will my lip filler look natural?

Will my lips look natural?

The goal of lip filler is not to transform your lips into something unrecognisable but to enhance its natural and unique beauty.

Regardless of your lip size or the amount of filler injected, the key is precision and balance. We specialise in creating lip enhancements that harmonise with your facial features, maintaining the natural look. We will improve the lips’ natural shape and structure, creating a subtle yet significant enhancement. Your desired outcome will be discussed before the procedure to give you the results that you wish for.

Natural beauty is defined by balance and symmetry.

My lips are small, can I get lip filler?

Many people think that small lips are not suitable for enhancement.  Or that they will look weird, the shape cannot be right and many more.

It’s essential to understand that beauty is not defined by the size of your lips. Small lips have their unique charm. Lip filler can enhance their natural beauty, creating a harmonious balance with other facial features. Sometimes just a small change like enhancing shape, or tweaking the symmetry may be needed to make them look just perfect.

Small Lips, Big Dreams

Our approach to small lips is to inject them gradually using the russian lip technique. To avoid filler migration to unwanted areas, we recommend 2 or 3 separate sessions to achieve desired shape or size. Appointments are spaced out 3-4 months apart. This gradual approach ensures that the results are not just stunning but also long-lasting.

If too much filler is injected at once, it may result in a filler migration. Migration happens when hyaluronic acid filler “migrates” outside the lips to the tissue next to it. This results in uneven, unnatural and aesthetically unpleasant appearance.

Different Techniques of Lip Filler

We offer different techniques of lip filler to create different looks for lips. Each technique serves a specific purpose, to ensure that our clients achieve their desired result and look.

1. Russian Lip Filler:

Russian lips also known as flat lip technique. This is a perfect technique to adjust the shape and excellent choice for clients who would like to enhance the shape and size of their lips. It can improve the shape of the cupid’s bow, correct the M-shaped lips and increase the size of smaller lips. With this technique we can create sought-after styles such as baby doll or heart-shaped lips. It gives the flat side profile and prevents the “fish pout” look of lips. With russian lip technique we can also address correcting asymmetry in uneven lips. It’s also best technique to build up the smaller lips.

2. Butterfly Lips (Tape Lips):

The Butterfly Lip is a corrective technique to address concerns regarding previous failed lip treatments. If your lips have been previously treated at another clinic and the filler migrated to other areas, usually above the top lip, we can correct it with this treatment. When a client experienced migration of their lip filler, we use this technique to partially dissolve the migration and add more filler at the same time to correct the previous work. At the end the tape strips are applied around the lips to prevent the filler from getting back to where it was previously migrated. The tape should remain on the skin for 48 hours. Depending on the extent of migration and the desired correction, this treatment may need to be repeated multiple times until the desired results are achieved. It is a gradual correction not a drastic change. This treatment is intended for clients who want to avoid dissolving their lips completely and then having to wait 4-6 weeks to inject them with filler again.

3. Secret Lips:

Secret Lips, it’s our newest and exclusive lip filler treatment designed to give you beautiful lips that look as natural as they can. Using an amount of up to 1ml of filler, we can customise each treatment to suit your unique look. The result? Lips so natural that everyone will be wondering if they’re your own or enhanced. You can hold the secret to perfect lips and keep them guessing.

By offering these three different techniques, we can fulfil the unique needs and preferences of all our clients.

Common Concerns with Lip Fillers.

When it comes to aesthetic treatments, lip filler is the most popular. However, it’s natural to have some concerns when considering this treatment.

1. Fear of Overdone Lips – One of the most common concerns is the fear of lips looking overdone and unnatural. The key to avoiding this is always clear communication with your practitioner. Check their portfolio before booking your appointment to see what they can offer. At Beauty Bar we emphasise the importance of achieving a natural and harmonious look that suits your unique features.

2. Pain or Discomfort – Many people worry about the pain or discomfort during this procedure. The reality is that lip fillers should be administered with care, using a topical anaesthetic to minimise any discomfort. Filler itself also contains lidocaine – a powerful numbing agent. We prioritise your comfort during the process.

3. Uneven Results – The fear of uneven or lopsided results is a valid concern. If the symmetry is your concern always talk to your injector to point it out. They will assess the shape of your lips, to ensure that they are beautifully symmetrical and in harmony with your facial features. Picking the right technique is very important here.

4. Allergic Reactions – While allergic reactions are extremely rare, they are a concern. To address this, make sure to disclose any allergies or sensitivities during your consultation. Your practitioner will use suitable products to mitigate any risks or in some cases may inform you that it may be safer to postpone the treatment.

5. Downtime and Recovery – Another concern is the downtime and recovery period. If you work during the week, plan your appointment on Friday so you can spend the recovery period comfortably at home. Never plan to have your treatment done just before an event or holiday. The good news is that recovery is usually minimal. You might experience some swelling or bruising, but this typically subsides within a few days. We provide detailed aftercare guidance to ensure a smooth and speedy recovery.

Your Beauty, Our Priority and your concerns are our consideration. We are dedicated to ensuring that your lip filler experience is a safe journey.

Do I Need My Filler Dissolved When Going to a New Clinic?

If you are considering switching to a new clinic or injector you may be wondering whether it’s necessary to dissolve your old filler before entrusting your face to a different pair of hands.

In certain cases dissolving your old filler may be necessary to ensure that your lips look best they can. Dissolving your filler may be needed in situations like present migration, or if you would like to change to a russian lip technique after years of having classic lip treatments. If you are unsure what to do please send us a picture of your lips from different angles and we’ll be happy to help and advise.

When do you need your filler dissolved?

1. Filler migration: Dissolving your current filler gives a clear canvas for the new injector to work on. If your old lip filler migrated to the areas where it shouldn’t be – for example above the top lip, it will be very hard to create a nice and natural shape to your cupid bow and overall your lips.

2. Lumps in your current lip filler: By dissolving your lumpy filler, you’re also getting rid of the lumps that are already there. In some cases if those lumps have been there for a long time, they may not dissolve and become permanent. In that case, we can work “around” those lumps but new filler will not get rid of them.

3. Uneven and asymmetrical, or overfilled lip filler: Dissolving your old filler in case of asymmetry ensures that we have more control over the desired outcome. We can work with your natural features, rather than trying to “fix” the existing shape. Overfilled lips if not dissolved, will require more filler to hide the previous shape, and it makes the new lips even bigger than before. The shape may be improved but the size will increase.

4. Changing the style: for example, if you have very plump lips but you would like to opt for a russian flat profile lips, we won’t be able to transition it without dissolving first.

But Lip filler doesn’t always need to be dissolved.

If your lips look nice, and proportional, without lumps and migration or your previous lip filler has dissolved over time naturally. Then you may not need to dissolve your old filler at all.

It is always a good idea to send us a picture asking for advice and guidance.

If you don’t want to dissolve your lips completely but you would like to improve the look of existing filler and correct filler migration, we have some correction treatments available. Butterfly lips, allows you to dissolve and fill lips during the same appointment. Please note that multiple appointments may be necessary to reach the required level of correction.

The process of dissolving your filler may seem intimidating, in certain cases it is a valuable step in achieving the best possible results.

How long can lips stay bruised after filler procedure?

It’s natural to wonder how long bruising might last.

Lip filler is gently injected with a fine needle. This process like every injectable treatment may cause some bruising, but results may vary from person to person. It is based on factors such as sensitivity, vascularity, and also individual healing capabilities.

You may notice some immediate swelling and bruising after your procedure, but it usually happens day or two after. This is temporary and it’s the body’s natural response to the trauma caused by needles. Your body is a remarkable machine that naturally repairs itself. As the days pass, your natural healing mechanisms is working to fade the bruises.

While the duration varies from person to person, the typical timeframe for bruises to subside is around couple of days to one week. Certainly, these waiting days can feel like an eternity, but remember that good things come to those who wait!

There are several measures you can take to speed up the healing process. Apply arnica cream, and avoid strenuous physical activities, it can aid in minimising bruising and promoting faster recovery. Time flies, and before you know it, that initial bruising will be a faint memory.

5 Essential Things to Avoid Before Getting Lip Filler

Lip filler can work wonders in transforming your smile from ordinary to extraordinary.

Blood Thinners: It’s important to avoid blood thinning medications and supplements such as aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, and vitamin E. They increase the risk of bruising and bleeding during injectable treatments. To minimise potential complications, steer clear for around three days before appointment.

Alcohol and Caffeine: Avoid alcohol and excessive caffeine consumption for around 48 hours prior to your treatment. Alcohol and caffeine dehydrate your body. Also can exacerbate bruising, swelling, and discomfort during the procedure.

Avoid Physical Activity: Postpone vigorous exercise as increased blood flow raises the risk of bruising and swelling. Take a break from strenuous workouts for at least 24 hours before your treatment.

New Skincare Products: While skincare is important, introducing new products or treatments that may irritate or sensitise your lips right before getting lip fillers isn’t the best move. Ingredients like retinoids, AHA BHA acids, and harsh exfoliators can make your lips more irritated, increase swelling, or discomfort during the procedure. Stick to your trusted routine and avoid experimenting with new products for at least a week prior to your appointment.

Tanning: Avoid excessive sun exposure and tanning beds. Sunburned or sun-damaged lips are more likely to develop complications during the procedure.

By following these tips, you’ll be well-prepared for your treatment.

Lip Filler or Lip Flip.

When it comes to lip treatments, there are numerous options available. Two popular choices are lip filler and lip flip. Although both methods can enhance your lips they differ in their techniques and outcomes.

Lip filler also called lip augmentation, is a treatment where hyaluronic dermal filler is injected in the lips. This treatment increases volume, shape, and definition of the lips. It plumps up the lips, to look fuller and more youthful and moisturised. Lip filler injections can be customised, for precise adjustments in shape and size. The results last up to twelve months.

Lip flip is a non-surgical procedure that enhances the upper lip without adding volume. A small amount of Botox, is injected into the muscle surrounding the lip. This relaxes the muscle and causes the lip to gently flip outward, this creates the illusion of a fuller upper lip. The lip flip procedure does not physically increase the size of the lips but can make them appear more prominent and defined due to relaxed pull.

Lip filler aims to add volume and shape to the lips, while the lip flip focuses on creating the appearance of a more visible upper lip by relaxing the muscle pull but without adding volume.

Lip filler lasts up to 12 months, and lip flip up to 3-4 months before a touch-up is required.

Lip filler is highly customisable, allowing for adjustments in size and shape. The lip flip has limited customisation as it relaxes the muscle without changing any lip shape, but it can help to treat smoker’s lines.

Deciding between lip filler and lip flip ultimately comes down to your personal goals and preferences. If you would like fuller lips or increased size or shape, lip filler may be your choice. However, if you seek a very subtle lip enhancement, the lip flip could be just what you need.

Magic of Lip Filler for Small Lips

Lip filler can transform smaller lips into a plump and luscious pout. It’s important to follow a gradual schedule to prevent filler migration.

If you’ve ever been feeling self-conscious about your small lips, then lip filler might be the answer you’ve been searching for. Cosmetic enhancement offers a safe and effective solution to boost your confidence and enhance your smile.

Plump and Juicy Lips

This non-surgical cosmetic procedure offers a quick and efficient way to add volume to small lips. Whether you were born with thin lips or have noticed a loss of volume with age, it can help you achieve the shape and size you always wanted for your lips.

Why Small Lips Should Be Enhanced Gradually?

When enhancing small lips, the key is to do it gradually. Instead of opting for a single appointment where a lot of filler is injected at once, we recommend to build it up slowly. This progressive technique not only avoids an unnatural “overfilled” look but also minimises the risk of migration, where the filler migrates away from the intended treatment area.

By gradually increasing the volume of your lips with each appointment, we carefully monitor and tailor each treatment to suit your unique requirements. This allows for a more symmetrical, harmonious, and natural-looking result that complements your face.

Preventing Filler Migration: Secrets Revealed.

Filler migration happens when the injected product migrates away from the treatment area. To avoid this risk, we space out appointments at 3 or 4 months. It allows your lips to adjust and accommodate to the added volume, reducing the chances of filler shifting or spreading unevenly.

Spacing out appointments gives your skin enough time to fully recover without overstretching before introducing additional volume. The results last longer and your lips look more natural.

Small lips should never hold you back from feeling confident and self-assured. With appointments spaced apart, you can avoid the risk of filler migration and enjoy long-lasting, beautiful results.

Lip filler can turn your small lips into a stunning, confidence-boosting feature.

How Often Shall I Get Lip Filler?

Many people turn to filler to enhance their lips. How often this treatment should be done to maintain the stunning smile?

Durability: Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in the body, it provides moisture and volume to the skin. Filler is temporary, its longevity varies depending on factors such as the viscosity of the filler, person’s metabolism and lifestyle choices. It usually lasts between 6-12 months.

The First Step to Lip Perfection: During this timeframe, you’ll enjoy plump lips. However, filler will be gradually “wearing off”, how quick depends on your metabolism and other factors.

Listening to Your Body: The decision to get subsequent treatments should depends on your body’s natural response. Some people may find that their lips maintain their desired fullness for longer, while others may notice a faster and gradual decrease in volume over time.

The Ideal Time for Refreshment: When building up the lip size, we recommend to wait a minimum of three months before adding more filler. This ensures that the previous filler has settled, and your skin had time to adjust. Most clients book their treatments once a year if they are happy with the size and shape they achieved.

Enhancing Your Natural Beauty: It’s important to prioritise your overall lip care routine. By keeping your lips healthy, hydrated, and well-nourished, you’ll optimise your lip filler results.

Consultation: If you are not sure how often you should have the treatment, you can always consult with us. We will evaluate your specific requirements, understand what results you would like to achieve, and recommend a personalised approach that aligns with your goals. The frequency of your treatments depend on various factors, including how your body metabolises the product and your desired look.

Lip Filler Contraindications

The safety and success of your lip treatment depends on different factors, including your health and medical history.

You must be 18 or over to receive any injectable treatment.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Lip fillers cannot be done during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Cold Sores: If you’re experiencing an active cold sore outbreak, you should postpone your lip filler appointment to prevent complications.

Blood Clotting Disorders: People with blood clotting disorders may face increased risks of bleeding and bruising during the procedure.

Blood-Thinning Medications: Blood thinners should be stopped 2-3 days before the treatment.

Active Autoimmune Disease: Active autoimmune diseases can affect how your body responds to the treatment, you should consult with your doctor before deciding to book an appointment.

At Beauty Bar in Ware, Hertfordshire, your safety and well-being are very important.

The evolution of lip fillers

Lip fillers have evolved a lot over time.

Early Beginnings: The Collagen Era (1980s)
The modern history of dermal fillers began in the 1980s with the introduction of bovine collagen, which was one of the first materials used for soft tissue augmentation. Collagen was initially used for a variety of cosmetic purposes, including lip enhancement. However, these early treatments were associated with some limitations:
Short Duration – Collagen fillers typically lasted only three to four months before they needed to be applied again.
Allergic Reactions – Because the collagen was derived from cows, people had to be allergy tested prior to treatment, and there was a risk of allergic reactions.

Hyaluronic Acid (2000s)
The early 2000s introduced hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers. Hyaluronic acid is much safer and more compatible than bovine collagen. The first HA fillers, like Restylane, received FDA approval in 2003. These fillers offered several advantages:
Longer-Lasting – HA fillers lasted six to twelve months, a significant improvement over collagen.
Improved Safety – The risk of allergic reactions was greatly reduced, and there was no need for allergy testing.
Reversibility – HA fillers could be dissolved with hyaluronidase in case of complications.

New Formulations (2010s)
The 2010s developed more sophisticated fillers designed to provide natural-looking results, tailored to specific areas of the face, including the lips:
Customised Fillers – HA fillers were developed with different viscosity and elasticity, allowing to use the best product for specific needs, such as enhancing volume, contouring, or hydration.
Improved Techniques – Injection techniques became more refined, focused on achieving more natural results and minimising bruising, swelling, and other side effects.
Introduction of Lidocaine – Many HA fillers began to include lidocaine, a local anesthetic, within the product itself, significantly improving client comfort during the procedure.

Expanding Options (2020s and Beyond)
As of the 2020s, the field continues to evolve, with research into new materials, techniques, and technologies:
Biostimulator Fillers – Bio-stimulating fillers such as poly-L-lactic acid (Sculptra) and calcium hydroxylapatite (Radiesse) have the ability to stimulate the body’s collagen production.
Microdosing and Natural Aesthetics – There is a growing trend toward using smaller amounts of filler to achieve subtle enhancements, reflecting a shift towards a more natural aesthetic.
Safety – Efforts are ongoing to improve the safety of lip fillers, with better techniques or tools designed to minimise complications, such as vascular occlusion.

Today, the field continues to advance with new products and approaches aimed at improving the safety, efficacy, and natural appearance of lip enhancements.
