Permanent makeup FAQ's
What is permanent makeup?
Permanent makeup also known as semi permanent makeup, micro pigmentation, PMU or cosmetic tattoo is a form of tattooing. It involves the deposition of pigment into the dermal layer of your skin using special machines and needles or microblades.
There are two primary tools that are used to pigmentation: microblading pen and the semi-permanent makeup digital machine.
Microblading is an ancient form of tattoo that originated in Japan around Edo period, and was reinvented in Asia around 2005. It uses a manual pen with fine blades that scratch the skin and deposit pigment to create hair-like strokes or powder onto your skin.
Semi-permanent makeup digital machine is a corded or cordless tattoo machine that uses cartridges with various needle configurations. These cartridges deposit pigment in the skin.
How long does a PMU appointment take?
It depends on the treatment, but usually ranges from 1.5 to 2.5 hours. The time length depends on the specific treatment, and some treatments may take longer than others.
In that time we include the application of the numbing cream, drawing of the template and filling out the paperwork.
Semi-permanent makeup consultation.
Before booking your appointment we’ll need to see you for a consultation. We prioritise your safety over anything else and a consultation is the first step to make sure that you don’t have any contraindication to the treatment, and you are not sensitive towards any ingredients in the pigment or anaesthetic cream.
We encourage our clients to bring pictures of their favourite eyebrows, eyeliners or lips to their consultation. We can then advise if similar results or colours can be achieved given the client’s skin type, and features. While you may like a specific look on someone else, factors such as bone structure may influence this style looking good or not on you.
We’ll prepare your patch test to help us identify any potential allergies and ask you complete a medical questionnaire. Through this detailed form, we can identify any conditions or contraindications that may impact the treatment.
We are always honest with our guidance to ensure that you select a style and technique that will meet your expectations.

How does semi permanent makeup work?
We want to make sure that you love the shape of your permanent lips or brows, so before we begin the treatment we draw a template (sketch) using a pencil. Pencil can be wiped off, and we draw the shape until you are happy with it.
During the process you can give us pointers if you would like your brows to be thinner or thicker, arch higher or rounded etc. Once we finish drawing the template, you will be given a mirror to check the template and if you are happy with it, we can proceed to the next step.
We’ll take the photographs of the drawing of your lips, eyeliner or brows, and give you a form to sign that says this is your preferred shape. The drawing takes between 15-30 minutes.
To ensure you are comfortable, we’ll apply a gentle topical numbing cream. This may take around 15-20 minutes.
Once you are comfy, we’ll start the tattoo process. Every skin is different and this process may take between 45-90 minutes, it also depends on the area and the treatment (eyeliner, brows or lips).
After we finish your new enhancement, we will take pictures and give you printed out aftercare instructions. The printed copy outlines everything you need to know to maintain your new enhancement.
You should schedule your complimentary top up perfecting appointment for 4-6 weeks later ( appointments booked for a later time will not be complimentary).
While some people may not require a touch-up, we still recommend booking this session. People with oily, combination, or thicker, more difficult skin may need this top up appointment. If you decide that the touch-up isn’t necessary, just give us a call to cancel it.
What should you know before getting permanent makeup?
- Right after your treatment your skin may be swollen or red. You should avoid making any social plans or booking holidays right after your permanent makeup appointment.
- If you’d like to recreate the exact makeup look you wear daily, it’s a good idea to come to your consultation appointment wearing your usual makeup. We can try to match your semi-permanent makeup to your preferred style.
- Avoid taking aspirin or anti-inflammatory medication like Ibuprofen for two days before your semi-permanent makeup appointment.
- Avoid alcohol for two days before your permanent makeup appointment.
- For six weeks before your procedure avoid retinols in the treatment area. Topical retinols have to be discontinued for 6 weeks prior to the treatment, oral ones for 6 months.
- Avoid AHA skincare products around the treatment area for at least four weeks prior to your appointment.
- Avoid chemical peels within four weeks prior to your appointment.
- If you’re a blood donor, it’s important to note that the National Blood Service requires a four-month break after micro-pigmentation.
- If you’ve recently undergone chemotherapy, we recommend waiting at least six months after your last session before scheduling your appointment. However, if your oncologist thinks that you can have the treatment earlier we will require a letter of approval signed by your doctor, to go ahead. The treatment can be done before the start of chemotherapy, but please remember it is a 2-step process, and appointments must be scheduled 4-6 weeks apart.
Aftercare Tips.
- If you wish you can go back to work the same day. There’s no downtime. However, it’s important to keep in mind that you won’t be able to apply makeup over your newly enhanced area for approximately five days following your treatment.
- Immediately after the treatment, you might experience some mild swelling or redness, this is entirely normal and temporary.
- Selected colour will look sharper and more defined. Over the next two weeks, the colour will gradually get softer, and more natural version of the original shade.
- You should apply an aftercare cream daily, after you washed your new enhancement. You can do that 3 times a day or more often if required.
- During the healing period, there are a few activities you’ll want to avoid. These include exercise, steam rooms, and swimming. Avoid any sweaty or dirty/dusty activities to minimise the risk of infections.
- Do not pick, peel or scratch your new enhancement. Don’t touch it with freshly unwashed hands.
Preparation tips for your PMU appointment.
Hydrate and Exfoliate: If your skin is dry or dehydrated, moisturise it for a few weeks leading up to your appointment. If you have oily skin, focus on thorough cleansing and exfoliating.
Stop using lash and eyebrow growth serums and boosters.
Think about what look you’d like to achieve: Try some different makeup looks to see what you like better, or what look makes you feel better. Browse online and see if there’s anything that you like. If you are unsure, you can always send us these pictures and we can help to guide you what can be achieved given your skin type and facial features.
By following these simple guidelines, you’ll be well-prepared and informed for your permanent makeup treatment.
How to Prepare for Permanent Eyebrows.
Waxing and Threading: If you regularly wax or thread your brows, make sure to schedule your appointment at least one or two weeks before your permanent eyebrow treatment. This will allow your skin to recover, minimising any potential irritation or sensitivity.
IPL Laser Hair Removal: If you’re getting IPL laser hair removal on your eyebrows, it’s important to do so at least two weeks prior to your permanent eyebrow procedure.
Electrolysis Treatments: If you’re getting electrolysis on your brows, book your session at least two weeks before your permanent eyebrow treatment.

Eyebrow Conditioning and Growth Products: To achieve the best results, avoid using any eyebrow conditioning or growth products for at least four weeks leading up to your permanent eyebrow procedure.
Botox: The anti-wrinkle treatment should be done and topped up 2 weeks or longer before your permanent eyebrow treatment, so the toxin has settled.
Eyeliner tattoo preparation.
If you’re planning on having eyelash tinting or perming treatments, make sure you get them done at least two weeks prior to your eyeliner procedure.
It’s vital to discontinue the use of eyelash growth products four weeks before your semi-permanent eyeliner appointment. This break will give your skin enough time to recover and minimise chance of irritation.
If you wear artificial lashes, you’ll need to remove them at least one week before your treatment. It’s important to refrain from applying them for at least two weeks following your appointment. This helps in avoiding any complications or infections during the healing process.
During and a few days after your appointment, please avoid wearing contact lenses. It’s best to stick to your glasses for the day. You can resume wearing your lenses a few days after the procedure.
After your semi-permanent eyeliner appointment, you may experience mild swelling. As a precautionary measure, you may ask someone to drive you home. Safety first!
Lip blush tattoo preparation.
Have you ever experienced cold sores (herpes simplex)? To minimise the chance of an outbreak, it is recommended to use anti-herpes medication, which you can get from your local chemist or your doctor.
Micro-pigmentation itself doesn’t cause cold sores, but if you carry the virus, it may trigger an outbreak.
IPL laser hair removal around your lips – make sure to schedule it at least two weeks before your procedure to allow your skin to recover fully.
Waxing or bleaching treatments, make sure to have them done at least two weeks prior to your lip appointment.
Electrolysis treatments should also be completed two weeks before your procedure to allow your skin to settle and avoid any potential complications.
Dermal fillers in your lips – we recommend scheduling these treatments four weeks before your semi-permanent makeup appointment.
How safe is permanent makeup?
Your safety is our top priority.
We use 100% disposable tools, needles, and cartridges.
We only use needle cartridges equipped with a safety membrane. This feature prevents any pigment or bodily fluids from traveling up the machine towards the motor and hand piece. It’s a one-way system that creates an impenetrable barrier against bacteria, viruses, and germs, ensuring absolute protection for our clients.
Between each client the work areas are sprayed, sterilised and sanitised. Disposable needles and other products are deposited in the medical waste bins, eliminating any chance of cross-contamination. Safety is non-negotiable, and we take it seriously.
While we take every precaution, it’s important to note that safety is a joint effort. Both the salon and the client share the responsibility for ensuring a safe micropigmentation experience. This is why we always conduct a thorough consultation before any treatment. It’s not just a formality; it’s an opportunity for you to discuss any medical conditions, diseases, or medications that may affect the procedure.
Proper aftercare and hygiene play an important role in minimising any potential risks.
Is Permanent Makeup Treatment Painful?
We all have different pain thresholds and sensitivity levels.
The level of discomfort you may experience can vary depending on the area being treated. But in general, it can be compared to a light scratching sensation. To minimise the sensation we apply a topical numbing cream to make the treatment more comfortable.
What Do You Need to Know about PMU.
After your procedure, you may notice some redness and swelling in the treated area. We do not overwork the skin so there will be no scabbing.
During the first few days, you may find that your fresh permanent makeup looks darker and more intense. This is completely normal and part of the healing process.
You don’t need to book any time off work, you can return to work the next day or even the same day if you wish.
You should avoid wearing makeup for a few days after your treatment. You will need to wash and moisturise your new permanent enhancement. This will be required around 3 times a day and for about 5 days.
Plan your appointment in advance, when you don’t have any social events or holidays.
How much does cosmetic tattoo cost?
Prices vary depending on the location, skill of the technician, and the treatment area.
Where can I get a permanent makeup treatment?
We always suggest to do a thorough research. Don’t look at the price tag or convenience (eg. a place is just around the corner), and focus on the quality of work.
Remember, your appearance is a reflection of your choices. Choose quality, and beauty that lasts.
How to look after your skin post cosmetic tattoo.
In the days following your semi-permanent makeup treatment, resist the temptation to touch or rub the newly tattooed areas. Avoid touching, picking or scratching the skin. It may be challenging, but the results will be worth it!
As your skin begins to heal, it’s completely natural for it to feel a bit itchy. This sensation is a sign that your skin is healing. Resist the urge to scratch and disrupt the healing process.
Wash the area properly, with sterile water or a saline solution.
Apply a very thin layer of Bepanthen cream multiple times a day (after a thorough cleanse) to keep your skin hydrated and enhance the healing process.
How long does permanent makeup last?
On average, it lasts for 2 to 5 years. However, there are a few important factors that can influence its lifespan.
Your lifestyle, hygiene practices, and overall health all play a significant role in determining the durability of your permanent makeup.
It’s important to cover up your pigmented areas from harmful ultraviolet light with an SPF.
Over time permanent makeup starts to fade, it’s completely natural. To maintain its look, schedule a refreshing touch-up every 1-2 years. This simple step ensures your permanent makeup remains looking its best.
Can I remove my permanent makeup if I don't like it?
With the help of advanced laser or manual removal treatments, you can remove unwanted or failed permanent makeup.
Removal may require multiple sessions to completely fade it, that usually depends on the depth of the pigment, and its colour.
Where on the face can I have permanent makeup?
When it comes to semi-permanent makeup, eyebrows are the most popular. The variety of techniques available to pigment the eyebrow area will leave you spoilt for choice.
