Hand Rejuvenation FAQ's

Aging hands.

The aging process involves various structural and cosmetic changes over time.
Intrinsic aging is a natural part of the aging process and is primarily influenced by genetics. As we age, our skin slows down production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. They are responsible for our skin’s structure, elasticity, and hydration. Reduced levels lead to thinning of the skin, loss of volume, and increased fragility.
Extrinsic factors, such as tanning and pollutants, also play a significant role in hand aging. Prolonged and unprotected sun exposure leads to cumulative skin damage. This accelerates the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibers, causing the skin to become thin and wrinkled. UV radiation also triggers the formation of age spots or hyperpigmentation.
Frequent exposure to harsh chemicals in cleaning products or beauty treatments, can contribute to aging by drying out and irritating the skin.
Other factors that contribute to hand aging include repetitive movements and mechanical stress, which can lead to the formation of creases and wrinkles. Decline in oil-gland activity result in drier skin.

Hand filler treatment in Hertfordshire.

Dermal fillers can be injected into the hands to to restore lost volume and improve skin texture.
They help to improve the look of thinning skin, wrinkles, prominent veins and tendons, and volume loss. Dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid, that naturally occurs in the body.  Hyaluronic acid attracts and retains moisture, contributing to plumpness and skin hydration. Hyaluronic acid fillers also stimulate the production of collagen in the skin. Collagen provides structural support and improves skin elasticity, enhancing the long-term anti-aging results.
We treat hands using a cannula. This usually requires one injection only and is quite comfortable.
The results after dermal filler treatment are visible immediately, with improved plumpness and smoother skin. Some mild swelling or bruising may show, but it subsides within a few days.
How long does it last? It typically lasts around 12 months. Regular maintenance sessions may be recommended once a year to sustain the desired effects after that time.

Type of dermal fillers used for hand rejuvenation.

We usually use soft or medium viscosity dermal fillers. These fillers best integrate with skin on hands, and give natural-looking results.
Hyaluronic acid: Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of the skin, provides hydration, volume, and elasticity. Dermal fillers with hyaluronic acid are well-suited for hand rejuvenation due to their compatibility.
Safety: They are biocompatible, meaning they are well-tolerated by the body and have a low risk of adverse reactions. There is a reduced likelihood of allergic complications.
Long-lasting effects: Hyaluronic acid fillers generally offer long-lasting results. The longevity can be influenced by individual factors such as metabolism, lifestyle, and health or medication but on average they last 12 months.
Gradual biodegradation: This process happens naturally and does not require additional intervention.

Who is a good candidate for hand filler?

Hand filler treatments are suitable for both women and men who would like to address signs of aging in their hands.
Typically, people in their 50s and 60s tend to research hand rejuvenation treatments, although there is no specific age recommendation. If your hands are dry and skin is damaged but you are only 30 or 35, you can effectively treat your skin with this treatment.
The primary concerns that people complain about include thin and wrinkled skin, visible tendons, visible veins, dry skin with uneven texture. These are typical signs of aging, and filler treatment can effectively address it.
Thinning and wrinkled skin is often caused by a decrease in collagen and elastin production, while the increased visibility of veins and tendons may be due to a loss of volume and skin elasticity. Dry, uneven skin texture can result from decreased oil gland activity and tanning.

How to prepare for your appointment?

Medication review: We will discuss your current medications, let us know about any blood-thinning meds, such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), or anticoagulants. These can increase the risk of bruising or bleeding.
Alcohol: Don’t drink alcohol for at least three days before your appointment. Alcohol is a blood thinner, can raise the risk of bruising and impact the healing process.
Hydration: Stay hydrated leading up to the appointment. Hydrated skin responds better to treatments and may reduce any temporary swelling.
Consultation: If you are not sure if that treatment is good for you, you may want to schedule a consultation. That could be either in person or via email. We can assess your hand’s condition, discuss your expectations, and provide personalised recommendation.
Sun protection: Protect your hands from excessive sun before the treatment. Sunburned and tanned skin is more sensitive. Apply sunscreen with a broad-spectrum SPF of 30 or higher when outside.

Hand rejuvenation with filler treatment - what to expect?

The process is short, straightforward, and well-tolerated.
  1. We will ask you to fill out the medical forms to exclude any contraindications to the treatment.
  2. Then we sterilise your hands and make a small injection with a needle. Through that injection we insert a cannula, a blunt needle. The cannula has a blunt end, which makes it more comfortable and less likely to cause pain or tissue damage.
  3. This allows us to distribute the filler in areas with visible tendons, thinner skin, or visible veins, plumping up the skin and making them less visible and smoother. Only one injection entry point is required for the cannula.
  4. Hand filler treatments are very well-tolerated without the need for anesthetic creams. The filler contains lidocaine, a local anesthetic, which minimises any discomfort during the procedure.
  5. If you have a specific preference and would like an anesthetic cream, this can be applied before your appointment, please let us know.
  6. The entire treatment takes between 15 to 30 minutes. It is a short procedure that can be completed quite quickly. After the filler has been injected, we will massage the treated area. This helps to achieve natural-looking results and create a smooth and uniform look.
  7. Bruising is rare after hand filler, but it may happen. You can use arnica gel or cream, to reduce bruising and swelling.
  8. Avoid strenuous exercise, excessive heat, and tanning immediately after the treatment.

What results can I get from my hand filler treatment?

Better looking skin: Your hands will look fresher, smooth, and more youthful. Dermal fillers will restore volume and hydration.
Reduced skin imperfections: It will reduce the look of dips or depressions in the skin, which are commonly caused by volume loss. The treatment can give a plumping effect.
Less visible veins and tendons: Dermal fillers can also help to hide visible veins and tendons that may become more prominent due to thinner and less plump skin.
Immediate and progressive results: The results are visible immediately after the treatment. However, the results continue to improve over the next four weeks. This is because the fillers bind water molecules, resulting in hydration, and stimulate collagen production, which helps improve the skin’s texture and elasticity.

Hand filler aftercare.

Sun and tanning: Avoid direct sun, especially in the first few days after your filler treatment. It can potentially worsen swelling, cause pigmentation, and increase the risk of complications. Use SPF30 or higher to protect the treated skin when exposed to sunlight.
Skincare with antioxidants: To keep your skin looking younger use skincare products containing antioxidants like coenzyme Q10, vitamin C, and vitamin E. They protect the skin from free radicals, support collagen production, and promote overall skin health.
Moisturise your hands: Keep your hands moisturised to maintain hydration. Choose a hand cream with hydrating hyaluronic acid or glycerin.
Avoid excessive heat or cold: Minimise exposure to extreme temperatures, such as hot showers, saunas, or freezing conditions. These can affect the treated area and compromise healing.
Gentle hand care: Be mindful of your hand care routine and avoid excessive rubbing, scrubbing, or harsh chemicals that may irritate the skin. Use mild, non-irritating cleansers when washing your hands.

How often shall I get my hand filler?

It depends on individual factors such as age, lifestyle, tanning, and how much dermal filler was used during the treatment. Hand filler treatment usually lasts around 12 months.
Age: The aging process affects people differently, and the rate at which they may require touch-up treatments can vary. Older clients may experience more significant volume loss over time, leading to faster re-absorption of the filler and a potential need for treatments more often.
Lifestyle choices: Lifestyle factors, such as tanning, smoking, and diet, can influence the longevity of hand filler. Excessive tanning can accelerate the breakdown of fillers. Practicing sun protection and healthy lifestyle may prolong the effects of the treatment.
Dermal filler amount: The volume of dermal filler used during the treatment can impact how long they last. Greater amounts may give longer-lasting outcomes compared to smaller volumes. It is important to strike a balance between achieving optimal results and avoiding overfilling, which can lead to unnatural-looking results.
Individual response: Each person’s body metabolises fillers differently, which can affect how long the results last. Some people may naturally break it down more quickly, while others may retain them for a longer.
