What is hyaluronidase and how does it work?
Hyaluronidase is an enzyme used to break down hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural substance found in the skin and connective tissues. HA is used in dermal fillers to add volume and smooth wrinkles. When injected, hyaluronidase quickly breaks down the HA in fillers, allowing the body to naturally remove the dissolved material.
This enzyme works by cleaving the bonds within the HA molecules, effectively reducing the filler’s structure and viscosity. It spreads through the tissues, targeting the HA filler and breaking it down for easy absorption and elimination by the body.
Hyaluronidase is a non-specific enzyme, meaning it can also affect the body’s natural HA, so it must be used carefully. It’s an effective option for correcting or reversing HA filler treatments when adjustments are needed.
Reasons to dissolve filler.
Dissatisfaction with your filler treatment
Sometimes people may not like the results or how they look after treatment with dermal filler. Migration, overcorrection or asymmetry are also common reasons why someone may want removal of the filler.
Filler Complications
In rare cases, complications such as vascular compression, or occlusion may happen following filler injections. To reverse the symptoms filler should be dissolved.
Filler adjustment and correction
In some cases, clients may want to adjust or modify their existing filler. Dissolving or partial dissolving allows us to targeted specific areas, and for the necessary adjustments to be made.
How long does it take to dissolve filler?
It depends on the type of filler (medium, soft etc), and the amount injected (1ml, 2mls, etc), and the person’s metabolism. The effects of dissolving are seen almost immediately, but for full results may take 24-48h.
Smaller amounts of filler dissolve more quickly, whereas larger volumes or fillers with thicker viscosity (sub q) may dissolve slower, or require more units.
Risks and side effects of filler dissolving
Filler dissolving is generally safe, but there are some potential risks and side effects to be aware of:
Allergic Reactions
Although rare, allergic reactions to hyaluronidase happen. Symptoms may include redness, swelling, itching, hives, or in very rare cases, anaphylaxis. Immediate medical attention is necessary if an allergic reaction happens. We always patch test beforehand to minimise this risk.
Temporary Loss of Natural HA
Hyaluronidase can also break down the body’s natural hyaluronic acid, potentially leading to temporary loss of volume or moisture in the treated area. This effect is short-lived and the body will reproduce its natural HA over time.
It’s important to inform us of any known allergies or medical conditions before the treatment.
Can all fillers be dissolved?
How many sessions of filler dissolving will I need?
The number of sessions needed to fully dissolve hyaluronic acid (HA) filler can vary based on type of filler, the amount injected, and your metabolism.
For smaller volumes or softer fillers, one session may be enough. Larger volumes or harder fillers may require additional sessions.
Contraindications to filler dissolving
Allergies: People with known allergies to hyaluronidase or to bee sting cannot receive filler dissolving treatment.
Bleeding disorders: People with bleeding disorders or those on blood thinning medications may have an increased risk of bleeding or bruising during this treatment.
Active infection: An active infection at or near the treatment site. Any infections need to be resolved before treatment.

Is filler dissolving painful?
Filler dissolving may sting a little when injected. We apply a numbing cream to the treated area before treatment to minimise dyscomfort.
It is generally well-tolerated although individual experience may vary, for example if you are extremely sensitive and have very low pain threshold, this treatment may feel less pleasant.. Hyaluronidase is injected into the area where the filler is located.
It’s important to communicate any concerns with us so we can ensure you’re as comfortable as possible.
How soon after dissolving can I get my lips filled again?
